FIRST TASTE... DIR EN GREY
[Please note that MS is currently high and is bouncing off walls at the moment. Ignore the extreme exuberance. XD]
I normally go through great lengths to spare most of you (including Ger ^_~) my insane (fangirlish) ravings. I'll even go as far as to wait a day or two until the initial excitement dies down so I can write a semi-coherent review. This time though, I gotta say something now, coherent or not. I promise not to do it again... err... at least not for a few months. XD
DIR EN GREY RAWKS!!!!
Last month, I posted the tracklists and album information for Six Ugly and Child Prey here. If you are a Dir en grey fan or even have a passing interest in their music, I highly recommend getting at the very least the mini-album. Both showcase how far they have grown musically and give you a taste of their current direction, while staying true to the original Dir en grey sound we've come to know and love.
In other words, these new songs are AWESOME! I cannot SAY how much I LOVE them. *falls over* Right now, my current favorite is "umbrella." We all know I love it when the band sounds like they're enjoying their music. It's why I sometimes like... unconventional songs like Glay's "I'm in Love" or Penicillin's "Limelight." Even though they're not "polished" or "perfect," there's a certain energy running through the song that pulls me in and refuses to let go.
"umbrella" (Six Ugly, Track 4) is one of those. It starts off fast, just drums and some weird electronic/distorted noises. Then the guitars jam in, hitting hard and heavy. Kyo's screams enter the fray followed by the rest of them chanting along. Then BAM. The refrain. It sounds like all the boys are singing with Kyo answering back. This is the part I absolutely ADORE. Technically, one or two of them back there are kinda flat *smirk* but the overall effect is that of a bunch of guys just singing and having a good time. They even sound lazy/drunk in parts adding to the whole "feel" of the thing. Maybe it's just me. XD Whatever they did/were going for though, I LOVE it. The refrain is also in a major key as opposed to the rest of the song which is in minor. While it's not always the case, switching to major almost automatically makes a song more "happy" sounding. The bridge part consists mostly of Kyo crooning "saiko~ no dina-shyou..." and the rest of them echoing. More chanting/answering and that totally fun refrain comes back in. The ending is vaguely reminiscent of "Jessica" with more chanting over Kyo's vocals. Love LOVE LOVE this song.
In general, there's a lot more chanting/shouting by the other members during most of the other tracks. Each song is clearly intended for headbanging and, as I'm sure those who managed to hit the Master of Monster shows can attest to, will sound twice as AWESOME live.
I really want to review the rest of the album but I MUST get to sleep. X_X;; Expect a full (and slightly more coherent) review soon. For the record, "Child Prey" is awesome too. I love the intro of the boys singing. XD
Dir en grey fans, GET the album NOW. And the single while you're at it. Make them happy. Make me happy and rave with me. It's fun. You know you want to. =P~ Both are available at CD Japan or your friendly neighborhood jrock store. ^_~ You guys know the drill.
Non-Dir en grey fans... hmm... don't really know what to say. If you couldn't stand them before, there's nothing really drastic enough here to convert you. The songs are solid headbanging material. Pure raw energy. If that's not your thing, then stay clear. It's not for everyone. If you're feeling frisky though, I definately recommend trying it. Or at least waiting until my full review for more detailed information. ^_^
Niiight folks~!
[EDIT 02.08.02: Changed lyric quote from "Psycho~" to "saiko~". go posted the actual lyrics on his blog. Thanks! ^_^/]
