Harry Potter Doujinshi >> Trans Jet >> SHINY HEARTS.

Title: SHINY HEARTS. (No. 001)
Circle: Trans Jet (Sakuya Sakura)
Character(s): All Cast
Date: 2001.12.29
Format: 28 pages; B5
Category: Gen/ Shonen Ai; Gag/ Drama

Sample Pages: 1, 2, Insert

Laurel says: I bought this one from Nym (thanks)! It has a black cover with Harry on his broomstick with Snitch. The coloring looks to be a cross between Copic and CG. This DJ came with a Trans Jet flyer/insert, with extra sketches.

The book contains six gag shorts and one longer story. The gags include a scene on the Hogwarts' Express (Harry gets a letter), Oliver Wood hugging Harry, a conversation between Remus and Severus, Molly reprimanding the twins, Percy reprimanding the twins, and Sirius and Remus meeting during the PoA storyline.

In the longer story, Harry is spending the night at the Burrow. After a game of Exploding Snap (?), the twins are teasing the boys. There is one slighly shonen ai moment here, with one of the twins coming on to Harry. It ends with Hedwig delivering a letter to Hermione, and the boys asleep.

The artwork by this circle attempts (and generally suceeds quite nicely) to straddle the line between realisism and manga. I love the character designs for all of the Weasleys, but am uncomfortable with this version of Remus Lupin and Sirius Black. Snape isn't much to look at either. Screentone is used competently, but not particularly innovatively.

A nice doujinshi to try a good mix of gag and serious; many characters, especially if you can get it at a decent price.

Harry Potter Doujinshi >> Trans Jet >> GRYFFINDOR YOUTH -- WHITE PAPER. QUIDDITCH SPECIAL!!

Title: GRYFFINDOR YOUTH -- WHITE PAPER. QUIDDITCH SPECIAL!! (No. 002)
Circle: Trans Jet (Sakuya Sakura)
Character(s): All Cast
Date: 2002.03.10
Format: 22 pages; B5
Category: Gen/ Shonen Ai; Gag/ Drama

Sample Pages: 1, 2

Laurel says: This DJ by Trans Jet carries on the tradition of Harry and Snitch on cover, with the Weasley twins on the back. The style has evolved somewhat, especially evident with Fred and George. Red glossy card stock cover and staple-bound. Coloring looks to be completely CG.

Contains about half a dozen gag stories, from Snape's reaction to Harry catching the snitch, to the Gryffindor locker rooms (probably your first chance to see Oliver Wood in the shower, Oliver Wood weeping, Oliver Wood hugging Harry...), a little Sirius/Harry shonen ai, a little twincest (the twins look like they are joking), and more.

Speaking of evolving style, the newer version of Snape works much better than in the previous Trans Jet DJ. Sirius is also vastly improved, but McGonagall looks terrible in her first appearance. DJ also features several decent splash pages.

Oliver Wood fans might want this DJ, as it has the most appearances I've seen of the character in a DJ.

Harry Potter Doujinshi >> Kuru Kuru Girl >> SNAPE-ISM

Title: SNAPE-ISM
Circle: Kuru Kuru Girl: Branch Office Hogwarts (Yuna Akiyama & Rei Miyabi)
Character(s): James, Snape
Date: 200?.??.??
Format: 38 pages; B5
Category: Yaoi; Drama

Sample Pages: 1, 2

Laurel says: I've said before that this DJ scares the hell out of me, what with its very girly Snape. It still does, but it's also grown on me. I haven't been able to locate any indication of publishing date or what number this DJ is in the KKG circle's series. I'd like to know if this was an early work, or if it's the most recent.

The cover features girly!Snape with very delicate features, slightly curly hair, and spectacles. He is surrounded by butterflies. On the backside, James looks slightly sinister (in the style of Mayu Shinjo (Kaikan Phrase) manga protagonists) and is wearing an interesting set of rings.

There is a short text story called SNAPE IS IN WONDERLAND, featuring full color illustrations (see James Potter as the Mad Hatter!). In HEAVEN, Snape is puttering about with Potions while James is bothering him. The ending is somewhat ambiguous.

Several very odd gag stories follow. Some include Harry, Hermione and Ron, but most are centered on Snape and James. The epilogue is actually the best part of the book, with a lot of semi-tender snogging on a sofa. James pretty much plays seme to Snape's uke throughout the book.

If you're going to buy a DJ by this circle, get this one. From the three I have seen, this is the best.

Harry Potter Doujinshi >> Kuru Kuru Girl >> Hogwarts Shitei Kyoukasho #1

Title: Hogwarts Shitei Kyoukasho #1 (No. 1)
Circle: Kuru Kuru Girl: Branch Office Hogwarts (Yuna Akiyama & Rei Miyabi)
Character(s): All Cast
Date: 2002.01.06
Format: 42 pages; B5
Category: Gen/ Yaoi; Gag

Sample Pages: 1, 2

Laurel says: This DJ has a rather nice CG of the trio superimposed over a gilt mirror which is obviously supposed to be Erised. Hermione's disappearing nose is distracting. The back cover is more comic in style, with a rather nice profile of Snape. Draco, Harry, Hermione, and Ron are also pictured.

The title of this DJ refers to Hogwarts Children, but I'm not sure about an accurate translation.

Basically this DJ's made up of many strange and unfathomable gags. Many take place in TBWL era, with others in the MWPP era. Quirrell is featured several times, as is Draco (usually arguing with either Harry or Hermione). There is a short gag involving Lily, James, and baby Harry. The longest story seems to take place in the MWPP era Gryffindor dorms, with the characters examining each others' feet (?!), Remus and Sirius doing a victory dance, and other odd happenings.

The interior art is nothing special, although you do see the beginnings of the girly!Snape featured in SNAPE-ISM. Screentone is minimal, with a lot of solid black for robes, etc. Extra points for showing Snape in a ponytail, and for the rather endearing scene of Harry and Co. sneaking about (Ron has his Weasley sweater on).

In short: weird art, strange stories; don't pay large sums of money for it.

Harry Potter Doujinshi >> Kuru Kuru Girl >> 3 Nen B Gumi

Title: 3 Nen B Gumi [Year Three, Class B] (No. 5)
Circle: Kuru Kuru Girl: Branch Office Hogwarts (Yuna Akiyama & Rei Miyabi)
Character(s): James, Snape; Harry
Date: 2002.08.09
Format: 34 pages; B5
Category: Gen/ Yaoi; Gag

Sample Pages: 1, 2

Laurel says: Very bright and colorful cover, with Harry, Hermione, and Draco. The back cover features the Weasley twins (wearing a total of eight earrings between them).

The stories inside are odd, but also interesting. There seems to be an underlying theme of James Potter's ghost/angel/spirit alternately haunting or watching over Severus. He is usually wearing a halo, and several times demonstrates that he is not-quite-corporeal. It appears that only Severus can see him (there are scenes with ghost!James and Harry, or with Fred and George).

Highlights of this DJ: the shrine to Quirrell, complete with incense pot, and Snape stabbing ghost!James with his wand. There are also a few interesting confrontations between Harry and Draco, and Hermione and Draco. Draco gets picked on a lot.

The art is about Kuru Kuru Girl standard, although I believe the screentoning has improved. Snape is still girly. This circle is the only one I've seen that has a spectacles-wearing Severus Snape. I rather like the effect, even if we don't have a basis for it in the canon.

As far as gag doujinshis go, this is a good one. The stories are easy to follow and amusing without much understanding of Japanese.

Harry Potter Doujinshi >> Nekogami-Duo >> Kamisama no Komodotachi

Title: Kamisama no Komodotachi [Children of God] (No. 1)
Circle: Nekogami-Duo
Character(s): Harry, Sirius; Hermione, Ron, Remus
Date: 2002.03.10
Format: 26 pages; B5
Category: Gen/ Shonen Ai; Drama

Sample Pages: 1, 2, 3

Laurel says: A beautiful pastel cover featuring Harry, Ron, and Hermione around a table. The back cover has a lust-worthy image of Sirius holding a wooden staff. I've noticed this circle favors earth-tones for its colors-- looks like Copic on watercolor card stock.

After a quick encounter with Draco, Harry is excited to share a letter he just received with Hermione and Ron. The letter appears to be from Sirius. Harry also has a stack of what looks like fanmail (or it may be an accumulation of letters from Sirius?). At one point Ron turns bright red from reading the contents of one letter.

The trio go to Lupin's cottage, where Remus and Sirius are waiting. After dinner, Sirius looks at Harry's photo album with him. There's also a discussion of when Sirius slashed the Fat Lady's portrait in PoA.

While Harry and Sirius visit, Sirius has a flashback to a conversation he had with James, and also of Peter's betrayal. Not much visible Sirius+Harry in this story, though there is certainly a lot of affection between them.

A heartwarming feel-good DJ, with lovely character designs and plot. Also contains a chilling scene of Sirius' laughter when he realizes what Peter has done.

One of my favorite Harry Potter doujinshi, and well worth your time.

Harry Potter Doujinshi >> Nekogami-Duo >> YOU WERE THERE

Title: YOU WERE THERE (No. 3)
Circle: Nekogami-Duo
Character(s): Harry, Sirius; Hermione, Ron, Remus
Date: 2002.06.03
Format: 42 pages; B5
Category: Shonen Ai/ Drama

Sample Pages: 1, 2, 3

Laurel says: Beautiful and slightly pastel rendition of Sirius, Harry, and Hedwig on the cover. There's a cute picture of Hermione and Ron sitting together on a loveseat on the back. Looks like everything was done in Copic, although some colortone might have been used for larger areas.

Harry, Hermione, and Ron are in Hogsmeade and meet up with Remus and Sirius (in 'Snuffles' form). While Sirius is visiting with Harry, Remus shares butterbeer with Ron and Hermione. Ron and Hermione experience disturbing mental imagery, Sirius catches a frisbee, Remus has a magic choke chain, and Harry is sweetly clueless.

This is very lightly shonen ai with Sirius+Harry implications. Normally this is a pairing I steer clear from, but in this case I love it. No lecherous Sirius lusting after his godson. Just this incredibly lonely, needy pair finding a soulmate in each other. Mostly hugs, blushing, and one kiss.

When Sirius and Harry are saying goodbye, something Sirius says upsets Harry, who begins to cry. He seems to be thinking about other people who he has seen kiss, because they love one another. Harry doesn't think he'll ever be loved that way, so Sirius decides to show him what it's like.

The artwork is great, and so is the variety of screentones. Remus and Sirius look just right-- beautiful, but careworn. Remus looks tired (and I adore his clothes). This is one of those DJs where you can see the love that the circle felt for their subject matter.

I love this doujinshi.

Harry Potter Doujinshi >> Nekogami-Duo >> Sora no Hitsuji [Sheep in the Sky]

Title: Sora no Hitsuji [Sheep in the Sky] (No. 5)
Circle: Nekogami-Duo
Character(s): Remus, Harry, Sirius; James, Lily
Date: 2002.08.09
Format: 38 pages; B5
Category: Gen; Shonen Ai/ Drama

Sample Pages: 1, 2, 3

Laurel says: Wahhhh! The latest DJ by Neko-gami Duo more than lives up to its predecessors. I have three of the publications to date and would be very grateful for any information regarding the other two(? I know Books No. 6 and 7 are HP. I don't know what series Book No. 4 was for.).

A beautiful 'night sky' scene with Sirius, Remus, and James makes up the front cover; probably copic. The more I see this circle's Remus the more it feels right. He just can't get any better.

There really isn't any Sirius+Harry subtext in this one, although it's obvious that Harry is staying with Remus and Sirius. Actually, the first story, which revolves around a full moon, seems to give the spotlight to the Remus and Harry dynamic, which I really enjoyed. Sirius makes a cameo appearance while Remus is recovering.

The second story takes place in the past. Remus and Sirius are waiting in an empty pub, when a cloaked figure approaches them-- it's James. The three friends talk of Harry and Lily, and good times for awhile, but a strain is evident. Sirius leaves, pulling James into a hug before he does. James is about to leave Remus, but sits back down again. It's very much a Remus and James story-- you get the sense of the unspoken questions between them. James finally returns home, and you can see that he's sad... there's a short conversation with Lily.

One thing I haven't quite figured out in the text... during the Remus and James conversation, practically every character Remus speaks has a dot to the right. I don't know what it means, or if it is simply some kind of type-setting problem....

Once again, Neko-gami Duo has impressed me with the emotional impact of their stories.
