CHARACTER FILE 5 :: CHINA

Chang Wufei and Sally Po are the two characters in the series who most strongly identify with their heritage and their country. To show this, their character file has been strongly influenced by the melodies of China both past and present, from the sounds of ancient Chinese instruments and melodies to the tunes of modern-day Mandarin pop and the Cantonese rock band Beyond.

Track 1. Bu Ke Yi Shi [Beyond // 4:15]
Unable to Die
An aggressive, rocking song to start off the album, a protest against the status quo.

Track 2. Wufei: "All evil that chooses to fight in outer space is my enemy!" Sword fight.

Track 3. Sword Dance [traditional Chinese melody // 1:43]
A fast-paced, athletic piece with traditional Chinese instruments. The title speaks for itself. Wufei's ancient art of the sword is one of the most extreme and beautiful forms of combat found in the series, more elegant than the beam swords used by the Gundams and much more deadly than Quatre and Dorothy's fencing foils.

Track 4. Bury My Lovely [October Project // 4:00]
Wufei image song.

Track 5. It's My Life [Bon Jovi // 3:45]
Wufei image song.

Track 6. Sound: water lapping on the banks of a small stream
Wufei's house is next to the stream and he is soothed by its sounds as he writes. Perhaps he goes out late at night and sits by its banks, watching the stars.

Track 7. Melodies of the Night Fishermen [traditional Chinese melody // 0:44]
The accompanying music to the sound above. The strings create the soothing effect of rippling water.

Track 8. Peng You [Emil Chau // 5:08]
Wufei image song.

Track 9. Sound: Chinese gong
Used in ancient China to announce important dignitaries or the entrance of royalty, here the gong announces the change of characters from Wufei, the more "traditional" Chinese, to Sally, the woman struggling to find her own heritage.

Track 10. Revolution [F.I.R. // 4:08]
Sally image song.

Track 11. Yu Ku Wu Lei [Valen Hsu // 4:10]
No Tears to Cry
Sally image song.

Track 12. Bamboo Flutes [traditional Chinese melody // 3:18]
Admist a lush background of birds and flowing water, Chinese bamboo flutes create a lulling melody of meditation.

Track 13. May It Be [Enya // 3:32]
Sally image song.

Track 14. Lu Duo Xiao Ye Qu [traditional Taiwanese folk song // 3:16]
Meilan image song.

Track 15. Wufei: "The ones who fight have to be strong!"

Track 16. Human Touch [Gundam X // 4:22]
Wufei and Meilan image song, accompanying track to the sidestory Human Touch.

Track 17. Hai Kuo Tian Kong [Beyond // 5:18]
The Wide Sea and Sky
Sally and Wufei image song and the file's ending song. This is sung by the same band that sang the opening song, but Hai Kuo Tian Kong is much more romantic, much more epic in scope. The theme song for the Act 9 version of the SnK weblog.

CHARACTER FILE 6 :: THE PREVENTERS

As a true military organization in SnK, the Preventers have a depth and breadth of scope that the Endless Waltz Preventers did not have. Since they are modeled after the armed forces of today's modern world, their CD contains different bugle calls to introduce each character. Bugle calls were originated in the military to signal different events, such as waking up, sleep, flag lowering and raising, and meals. Today, even though modern technology has progressed far beyond that of the days when those calls were first written, the sound of bugle calls is still, more than ever, a proud reminder of the military's roots and tradition. You can learn more about bugle calls here.

Track 1. Fanfare for the Common Man [Aaron Copland // 3:11]
A brass and percussion fanfare to start out the album. Probably one of Copland's most famous works, the fanfare symbolizes the fact that all the Preventers, whether noble or common born, are all tied together for the same great cause.

Track 2. Rhythm Emotion [Two-Mix // 3:55]
The second Gundam Wing opening theme. Had to fit it in somewhere, and the Preventers CD seemed an appropriate place.

Track 3. Bugle call: First call
This call was used call the buglers to get ready for Reveille. For Treize, since he was the first inspiration for the Preventers.

Track 4. Treize: "Fellow comrades, only warriors exist in this world."

Track 5. Unforgiven [Metallica // 6:28]
Treize image song.

Track 6. Bugle call: Reveille
Anyone who has ever served in the military (including me) will tell you that this is the most dreaded call in the history of bugle calls: the wake up call. Imagine waking up to the cheerful sound of a bugle at 4 AM. You'd be grumpy too. As it is, Reveille is also probably the second most well-known bugle call.

Track 7. Sound: "All units, report."

Track 8. Sound: "Atten-TION!" Troops snap to attention.
The beginning of the "true" Preventers' album. Treize is an important figure, but only as an inspiration to Une, who is announced by this track, as commanding officer.

Track 9. Black Hole Sun [Soundgarden // 5:18]
Une image song.

Track 10. Tears in Heaven [Eric Clapton // 4:36]
Une image song.

Track 11. Bugle call: Adjutant's call.
This call is used to announce the beginning of a formal troop review and parade. The parade adjutant shouts "Sound Adjutant's Call!" which signals the bugler to play the call and begin the review. This is for Li and Carrington, both Une's "adjutants" on base.

Track 12. Sound: "Identify." Beeping, then "Accessing." Computer noises.

Track 13. Idol Talk [Macross Plus // 4:59]
Li image song.

Track 14. Believer [Laura Dawn // 4:16]
Carrington image song.

Track 15. Bugle call: Assembly
Used to signal the troops to formation for Retreat. For Zechs, the Operations commander.

Track 16. Sound: Battle noises, and the sound of someone getting into a mobile suit
Signal for the beginning of the A007 segment of the CD.

Track 17. Mighty Wings [Top Gun // 3:46]
Zechs image song.

Track 18. Bitter [Nine Days // 5:21]
Zechs image song.

Track 19. Bugle call: Retreat
Call to lower the flag and also the official start of evening.

Track 20. Zechs: "Some lessons can only be learned by risking one's life." Heartbeat.
Noin's introduction...a fitting quote for her involvement in the story.

Track 21. Holding Out For a Hero [Bonnie Tyler // 5:49]
Noin image song.

Track 22. Jackie's Strength [Tori Amos // 4:26]
Noin image song.

Track 23. Amazing Grace [John Newton // 3:32]
One of the most moving version of the famous hymn is the bagpipe version, played at many ceremonies, especially funerals.

Track 24. I Want to Spend My Lifetime Loving You [Tina Arena & Marc Anthony // 3:56]
Zechs and Noin image song.

Track 25. Bugle call: Taps
This is the most famous bugle call, heard many times at military funerals. Traditionally the call for lights out at military installations, it's become something more than that. It symbolizes both the beginning and end of something and speaks to the hearts of all military members, but also to civilians as well.

Track 26. Blue [Cowboy Bebop // 5:04]
This amazingly beautiful song is the ending theme for the anime and also the theme song for Act 6 of SnK and Noin's life and death. A fitting way to end the album, with a tribute to her.

CHARACTER FILE 7 :: EUROPE

This is the last CD in the files and the one which brings together the characters of SnK who are European noble-born. For the nobility, their days consist of social functions, parties, and basically political wrangling with words. This is the life that Dorothy despises, that her mother loves, and the life that Relena has accepted as Queen of Cinq.

I wanted something to symbolize the elegance and richness of the lives of people like Dorothy and Relena, and so the theme of this album is "an evening party." Between the image song tracks, I've used sound clips from the BBC production of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, the famous depiction of the well-to-do life of 17th century English gentry. Also acting as themes for the various characters are pieces from Edward Elgar's Enigma Variations. You can learn more about the Engima Variations here.

Track 1. Sound: Wine bottle cork opened, ice cubes in a glass, wine poured.
The party begins.

Track 2. Waltz for the Moon [Final Fantasy VIII // 3:00]
A nice, light waltz to start off the night, as various couples whirl off to the dance floor while others sip wine and gossip.

Track 3. Enigma Variations #1: C.A.E. [Edward Elgar // 1:52]
The theme on which the other variations are based, named for Elgar's wife Alice. This is the introduction for Alicia Catalonia, since her name is very similar to "Alice" and she is the theme on which many of the SnK characters are based: Leon, Emily, Etille, and Dorothy.

Track 4. Pride and Prejudice #1. Mr. Bingley: "A fine concession. Come man, admit it! She's an angel." Elizabeth Bennet: "And as you know he is never wrong."
A good descrition of Alicia (by Meyer Khushrenada perhaps? Or her brother?) and Alicia's thoughts on Etille.

Track 5. Infection [Onitsuka Chihiro // 5:35]
Alicia image song.

Track 6. Pride and Prejudice #2. Mr. Collins: "I have been treated with such affability, such condescenion, as I would never have dared to hope for."
Dermand Etille about Alicia.

Track 7. Enigma Variations #5: R.P.A. [Edward Elgar // 1:55]
Etille's introduction. A melancholy, brooding track named for Richard Arnold, pianist and son of the poet Matthew Arnold. "His conversation which covered serious matters was interrupted by witty remarks."

Track 8. Retrouvailles no Bansan [Lareine // 3:05]
The Dinner of Retrouvailles
A semi-instrumental interlude track with sounds of a dinner party in the background while a medieval sounding dance tune is played.

Track 9. Who Wants to Live Forever [Queen // 5:16]
Etille image song.

Track 10. Rezo [Carlos Ponce // 4:00]
Prayer
Etille and Alicia image song.

Track 11. Enigma Variations #6: Ysobel [Edward Elgar // 1:12]
The Dorothy track. Named for Isobel Fitton, a young viola player, this is a light variation with just enough dignity to it to make it serious.

Track 12. Pride and Prejudice #3. Mrs. Bennet: "I do not see that! Why should I see that? Why should that be?" Glass breaking. Mr. Bennet: "Three of the silliest girls in England." Elizabeth Bennet: "Of all this, I might have been mistress."
This is an exploration of the dynamics of the Catalonia household. The first quote is for Lady Emily and her viewpoint on certain subjects. The second is to introduce the "power trio" of SnK politics: Dorothy, Sylvia, and Relena. They might be young, but they will soon command the respect of the world. And the third is Dorothy, musing on her mother and her inheritance of the Dermail Duchy.

Track 13. Bachelorette [Bjork // 5:15]
Dorothy image song.

Track 14. When You're Alone [Hook // 3:13]
This is kind of a nostalgic song. I imagine a young Dorothy, perhaps 5 or 6 years old, singing it to herself on lonely nights. Growing up without true parents or friends, Dorothy had to learn to make it on her own.

Track 15. Aoi Arashi [Fushigi Yuugi // 5:19]
Blue Storm
Dorothy image song.

Track 16. Sound: Party noises and women laughing

Track 17. Enigma Variations #10: Intermezzo (Dorabella) [Edward Elgar // 2:52]
An airy, spring-like track that fits Sylvia very well. Dorabella was the daughter of the Rector of Wolverhampton.

Track 18. Birds [Sakamoto Maaya // 5:31]
Sylvia image song.

Track 19. Pride and Prejudice #4. Elizabeth Bennet: "I cannot bear to think that he is alive in the world...and thinking ill of me."
Relena's very thoughts on Heero during most of SnK and especially when she meets him again on the Preventers base.

Track 20. Enigma Variations #9: Nimrod [3:52]
Named for AJ Jaeger, Elgar's close friend, Nimrod is the most famous variation that he wrote, due to its sweeping, rich, and intensely beautiful scope. I reserved this last variation for Relena, the main female character of Gundam Wing and SnK, who blossoms and grows from a naive child to a beautiful woman, both inside and out.

Track 21. Winter [Tori Amos // 5:42]
Relena image song.

Track 22. The Promise [When in Rome // 3:42]
Relena image song.

Track 23. Pride and Prejudice #5. Elizabeth Bennet: "Of some delights, I believe a little goes a long way."
What Alicia, Dorothy, Sylvia, and Relena come to believe and the main way they differ from their other noble born counterparts, who believe that amassing great wealth and fame is the way to happiness. These four have a wider world view and a desire to serve others.

Track 24. I'm Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman [Britney Spears // 3:51]
A song to follow up the previous quote for all four ladies. All of them grow and change during the course of the story, even Alicia.

Track 25. It's Just Love [Ooishi Rumi // 3:57]
The Gundam Wing ending theme and the end of the Character Files. Since this is pretty much a Relena song, it's also rather appropriate for the end of the Europe CD.
