There are several different ways to post your fic on the net. Most archives post fics in either HTML format or Text.
HTML:
Best thing to do is use an HTML program like Netscape Composer. Simply cut and paste your story from your word processor and format it to your liking.
If you need to write straight HTML, copy and paste this code, making sure to replace everything within the brackets [---] with the appropriate information: Fic HTML
Text:
Text files are usually written and saved in Notepad. Don't forget to manually hit the 'Enter' key to separate each line, after 60-70 or so characters. This will prevent the reader from having to use the horizontal scrollbar to read your fic.
Here's another tip if you can write it in Word; I have found it's easier to do it this way:
- In Word, select all your text and change the font to Courier New and the size to 10. This is how the fic will look in Notepad anyway.
- With the text still selected, move the left margin to say 6 inches. This will line-break the fic automatically so you don't have to break every line in Notepad.
- Next thing, save the file as "text with line breaks" Again this will preserve the format.
- If you don't want to mess with the margins, change the font size to 12 instead of 10 and save it as "text with line breaks" again. Next time you open up the file in Word, the font will convert to size 10 on its own and the lines will be broken around the 6-inch margin.
