Where to get ideas for fics
Hmmm... getting ideas is always an interesting time. Sometimes they'll just hit me, full blown in the face. Other times, I'll see or overhear something that gived me a starting point, or other scene for a story and I find someone willing to listen to me ramble until I get it sorted out in my head.
Beginning a fic (plot outlines, research, etc.)
Beginning a fic is usually one of the hardest times I have. I'll have this wonderful idea, I know where I want it to go... but until I get that first paragraph on paper, it's useless. Usually I'll find a stable point in the fic (Where I *know* what's happening) and work backward in my head until I find a spot that would make a good beginning.
"Cures" for writer's block
Writer's block is likely the most controversial part of fic writing. I don't necessarily believe it exists, in the essence that you get NO ideas in your head... there's always SOMETHING there. However, there are times when I've taken a segment as far as I can, and then I start the next piece. However, I've been known to procrastinate on starting the next part.
Resources and other helpful hints
Resources are everywhere... be they webpages about Fushigi, or actual books of the culture of ancient China. My favourite method is to go to a search engine, type in one word that has something to do with the fic I'm writing and see what comes up. You'd be amazed at some of the things you find.
Miscellaneous Tips
As for general advice... stick to what you enjoy, because if you write a fic based on someone else's preferences, you'll almost always wind up resenting it. This leads to unfinished fics and highly unhappy readers.
