Where to get ideas for fics
I get ideas from other fanfics, movies, books, or just by thinking and setting up a background first before I add any characters. Often they will write themselves. Just let the characters BE themselves.
Beginning a fic (plot outlines, research, etc.)
In beginning a fic, a background is extremely important. Make sure you know what the $%@# you're talking about! If you want to use Japanese, make sure you know what the words mean!
"Cures" for writer's block
The only cure for writer's block, is to leave the fic alone. Don't #$%&@* touch it! Work on something else. Your mind needs a rest. Do more research, or read other fics. That will normally help give me new inspiration and a boost.
Resources and other helpful hints
Researching character backgrounds and setting backgrounds is essential to make a fic that makes sense. Unless you are going for something that's completely different. I use books and websites through search engines like: Altavista or Ask.com. Very helpful. I also have a friend who happens to know a lot about old Asian ways and legends. So it helps a lot.
Miscellaneous Tips
As listed by the Author Quicksilver, on her FY Fanfic Index, there are do's and dont's. And I agree with them. I suppose, in the end, fanfiction is for your own enjoyment and all. But if yah want to share them, think of who will be reading your fic, and try to write accordingly. What would a reader want to see? That should be the first thought in your head. Then just let the characters go.
