Fanfiction 101: On Writer's Block

Nuriko Nuriko:

Writer's block is likely the most controversial part of fic writing. I don't necessarily believe it exists, in the essence that you get NO ideas in your head... there's always SOMETHING there. However, there are times when I've taken a segment as far as I can, and then I start the next piece. However, I've been known to procrastinate on starting the next part.

Tasuki Tasuki:

The only cure for writer's block, is to leave the fic alone. Don't #$%&@* touch it! Work on something else. Your mind needs a rest. Do more research, or read other fics. That will normally help give me new inspiration and a boost.

Mitsukake Mitsukake:

Cures for writer's block? Gomen, I don't think my power applies to that. Wish it did, though...-_-

Chiriko Chiriko:

There is no such thing as writer's block.

Such a firm, harsh statement, but a theory I avidly subscribe to. Writer's block is an excuse for stopping writing when a difficult section of a fic comes up- and this can be overcome in only one way. Writing. Professional writers do not have the luxury of getting "blocked"- they do it for a living. No writing, no money.

If possible, keep several fics in the process, usually at different stages. That way, if you're feeling -ah, blocked, as you would say- on one fic, pick up the editing on another. And so forth.

If you can't come up with an idea (and it does happen, but I don't call this "blocked"), just start by describing something. I can't count how many pieces I have on what the wall in front of me looks like. Some of these I've even been able to incorporate into my writing at later points.... I have numerous mountain scenes written, but that's probably because I stare out the window when I'm feeling inspiration-challenged.

Hotohori Hotohori:

Writer's Block is just a bit of laziness. It shouldn't happen if you plan everything out. If you don't, and run fresh out of ideas, then thats how it happens...or to my belief it is. My advisors agree with this.

Chichiri Chichiri:

I have to agree with Tasuki. If you are stuck, let it go for now, or try to work on another chapter. Maybe even the ending! You can go back and fill it in later. Sort of like that first sentence no da.

Tamahome Tamahome:

This brings me to "cures" of writers block (and another 10 transition). There are none!! BWHAHAHAH!! Actually, if you just leave it alone it'll come to you. I floss my teeth when I can't think of anything. Also, I go pick a fight with Tasuki. I get thinking time while fighting, and even more thinking time while I'm being patched up!
